About Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner

Every piece of wood is different, depending on the grain and knots, and it will therefore soak up moisture inconsistently. A Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner will seal the wood giving it a more consistent finish on top of which the wood stain can then be applied.
As the conditioner is water-based, it is easy to clean any brushes or cloths with soap and water. It is also low odour, VOC-free and non-toxic.
Always match a water-based conditioner with the same brand of water-based stain, to ensure compatibility. For interior and exterior use. Apply prior to using our Wood Stain or Exterior Wood Stain.
Treating the wood with a conditioner will not change the colour of the wood, but it means that the stain will dry slightly lighter once applied as less stain will soak into the more absorbent areas of the wood. However, if you like the rustic look, then you can also stain pine and other softwoods directly, without the need for the conditioner.
Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner is Suitable For
Our Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner can be used on any softwoods including pine, fir and spruce. It can also be used on porous hardwoods such as birch, maple and alder to help the stain soak in and colour the wood more evenly.
Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner’s Coverage and Shelf Life
Store in a cool dry place, away from direct sunlight.
Storage temperature should be between 8°C and 30°C.
Once opened, use within one year.
How to use Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner
Prepare the wood as you normally would prior to staining.
Ensure that all dust has been removed. Apply one coat of Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner liberally with a foam brush and leave for five minutes allowing the product to soak into the wood. Wipe off the excess and allow to dry for 30 minutes. Lightly sand the wood with fine-grade sandpaper to smooth out any raised grain removing all sanding dust afterwards.
For best results apply the Wood Stain within one hour of the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner drying.
